Griha Pravesh — the ceremonial first entry into a new home — is one of the most sacred events in Hindu household traditions. This ritual marks the beginning of a family's life in their new dwelling and is believed to determine the energy and fortune that the house will hold. There are three types of Griha Pravesh: Apoorva (entering a newly constructed home for the first time), Sapoorva (re-entering a home after renovation or a long absence), and Dwandwah (entering a home after an inauspicious event). Each type has slightly different Panchang requirements, but general principles apply to all. The Nakshatra selection for Griha Pravesh is especially stringent. The most favorable include Rohini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Shravana, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. These Nakshatras are associated with stability, nourishment, and prosperity — qualities essential for a home. Uttara Phalguni is particularly noteworthy as it is ruled by Aryaman, the deity of patronage and hospitality. Shukla Paksha is mandatory for Griha Pravesh in traditional practice. The waxing moon symbolizes growth and increasing fortune — exactly what you want as you begin life in a new home. Among the auspicious tithis, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, and Ekadashi are preferred. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are the recommended weekdays. The traditional ceremony involves lighting a havan (sacred fire), boiling milk until it overflows (symbolizing abundance), and the lady of the house entering first with the right foot — all timed to coincide with the chosen muhurat.
