Engagement

The engagement ceremony (Sagai or Ring Ceremony) is the formal commitment between two families before the wedding. While slightly less Panchang-sensitive than the wedding itself, choosing an auspicious day for the engagement is considered important as it sets the foundation for the upcoming marriage. Favorable Nakshatras for engagement mirror those for marriage but with slightly more flexibility: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, and Revati are all excellent. The Tithi should be from the auspicious set — Dwitiya through Trayodashi, preferably in Shukla Paksha. The engagement is often a smaller, more intimate event, which gives families greater flexibility in choosing the perfect Panchang alignment. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are the preferred weekdays, with Thursday being considered especially auspicious for this ceremony as Jupiter's energy blesses new commitments and partnerships.
